The Sun
When someone asks you “What’s your sign?” and you answer something along the lines of “I’m a Scorpio!” or “I’m a Gemini!” you’re talking about your Sun Sign. This is the most known and talked about sign when discussing Astrology. It’s important to note that it’s not the only deciding factor when it comes to your personality. However, it’s still a very important sign to consider. Just as the Sun in our solar system brings life to us here on Earth, the Sun in astrology brings life to our birth chart.
The Sun changes signs once a month. Ruled by Leo, it rules your ego, your personality, how you see yourself, and how you consciously present yourself to the world. The Sun also rules any father figures or your more masculine parent.
When living in alignment with our Sun’s energy, we’re creative, purposeful, and authentically confident. However, if we fall out of alignment with our Sun, true confidence falters. We become boastful, egotistical, and selfish.
The Moon
The moon, ruled by Cancer, is the fastest moving “planet”. It changes signs about every 2 - 3 days. The Moon rules over our emotions. It determines what we need to feel safe, secure, and “at home”. Your Moon sign can also tell you about your mother or the more nurturing parental figures in your life.
Being the planet of feelings, the Moon rules over our mood and how we emotionally react to various situations. The Sun is more logical while the moon is instinctual. It deals with the past (including past lives) and your ancestry.
When we’re in alignment with our Moon, we feel safe, grounded, and emotionally stable. Falling out of alignment with our Moon means we become fearful and moody. The energy of the Moon is quiet, introspective, and secretive. The whole world can see your Sun sign. But only those who you’re absolutely comfortable with earn the privilege of seeing you fully express your Moon.
Mercury
Mercury rules both Gemini and Virgo and takes about 2.5 days to travel through each sign. The sign Mercury falls in influences how you talk, gather and process information, and your communication style. This is quite the logical planet, more interested in facts and data and less interested in emotions.
This planet rules technology and thus, how we use it to communicate. Often our first interaction with someone is through email, a DM, or a comment on a social media post. It influences our communication style on these platforms and how we come across when we make that initial contact. Mercury is also infamously known for its retrograde period which happens 3-4 times a year. Often this is when technology fails us, arguments flare, and travel plans go awry.
When we’re in alignment with our Mercury, we’re curious and communicate effectively. But when we lose touch with this planet, we can become nervous, indecisive, and high-strung.
Venus
Venus is the planet of love, beauty, and pleasure. It’s ruled by both Taurus and Libra and takes about a month to travel through each sign. Your Venus sign indicates how you give and receive love, your aesthetic tastes, and what brings you pleasure in life.
This planet rules over partnerships, romantic relationships, and friendships. It tells us what we value and what we’re willing to compromise for the sake of love. Venus is also connected to art and creativity. When we’re in alignment with our Venus, we feel confident and self-assured in our relationships and artistic pursuits. But when we’re out of sync with our Venus, we can become materialistic and superficial.
Mars
Mars is ruled by Aries and is the planet of action, energy, and desire. It takes about 2 months to travel through each sign. Mars rules our ambition, sex drive, and how we assert ourselves in the world.
This planet is connected to our physical body, our stamina, and our endurance. When we’re in alignment with our Mars, we’re able to take action towards our goals with courage and passion. But when we’re out of touch with our Mars, we can become aggressive, impulsive, and combative.
Jupiter
Jupiter is the planet of luck, expansion, and growth. It’s ruled by Sagittarius and takes about a year to travel through each sign. Jupiter rules over our belief system, our sense of optimism, and our ability to take risks.
This planet encourages us to seek knowledge, to expand our minds, and to take leaps of faith towards our dreams. When we’re in alignment with our Jupiter, we’re optimistic, open-minded, and filled with a sense of purpose. But when we’re out of sync with our Jupiter, we can become overly optimistic, naive, and impulsive.
Saturn
Saturn is ruled by Capricorn and is the planet of structure, discipline, and responsibility. It takes about 2.5 years to travel through each sign. Saturn rules over our career, our long-term goals, and our ability to plan for the future.
This planet is connected to authority figures, rules, and regulations. When we’re in alignment with our Saturn, we’re able to establish solid foundations for ourselves, work hard towards our goals, and take responsibility for our actions. But when we’re out of touch with our Saturn, we can become fearful, anxious, and stuck in old patterns.
Uranus
Uranus is the planet of revolution, innovation, and change. It’s ruled by Aquarius and takes about 7 years to travel through each sign. Uranus rules over our unique qualities, our desire for freedom and independence, and our ability to think outside the box.
This planet is associated with sudden and unexpected events, especially those that bring about change and progress.
When we’re in alignment with our Uranus, we’re able to embrace our individuality and embrace change with excitement and enthusiasm. But when we’re out of touch with our Uranus, we can become rebellious, erratic, and unpredictable.
Neptune
Neptune is the planet of spirituality, dreams, and illusions. It’s ruled by Pisces and takes about 14 years to travel through each sign. Neptune rules over our intuition, our creativity, and our ability to connect with the unseen world.
This planet is connected to our subconscious mind and can reveal the hidden truths and desires within us.
When we’re in alignment with our Neptune, we’re able to tap into our intuition and creativity, allowing us to live a more spiritual and fulfilling life. But when we’re out of touch with our Neptune, we can become delusional, addicted, and lost in our own fantasies.
Pluto
Pluto is the planet of transformation, power, and regeneration. It’s ruled by Scorpio and takes about 14 to 30 years to travel through each sign. Pluto rules over our deepest desires, our ability to face our fears, and our ability to let go of what no longer serves us.
This planet is associated with death and rebirth and can reveal the parts of ourselves that we may have buried or denied.
When we’re in alignment with our Pluto, we’re able to let go of old patterns and embrace transformation, allowing us to live a more authentic and empowered life. But when we’re out of touch with our Pluto, we can become manipulative, controlling, and obsessed with power.
